In this little scene from Boris Barnet’s The House on Trubnaya (1928) Paranya, a young girl who came to Moscow from a tiny village, goes to see a theater performance for the first time in her life and becomes so overwhelmed with the protagonist’s death at the hands of the bad guy, that she runs up on the stage and beats up the baddie with a stick.

You can’t do such a thing when a character you are cheering for gets killed in a movie or TV series, which clearly makes theater a superior form of art.
