Papercutting stopmotion animation of a fairy in hanfu
The Golden Conch/金色的海螺 is a 1963 animated film produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio. It tells the story of a sea conch fairy named Hailuo who falls in love with a poor fisherman named Aniu, in spite of her mother (the sea queen)’s wrath. The story is adapted from the Chinese folktale “The Snail Girl”, in which a river snail girl falls for a farmer. The animation style is based on traditional Chinese shadow puppets and papercutting art.
